On his website, Mark Evanier spills a few beans re: the upcoming Kirby Jimmy Olsen reprint editions. The link is here : http://www.povonline.com/News012803.htm

The big scoop is that there are two volumes coming. (I guess that's a scoop. I haven't heard that, yet) I'll hazard a guess and say that these might be in the same format at the upcoming Challengers volumes. Can this be the beginning of a decent DC Kirby Library (without them coming out and committing to it?)

Discuss.

As stated on another thread, this is a color volume, exact format, title, and release date are forthcoming. Jack's stories ran from #133-148 (excepting #140) which are too many pages for one volume. Two 192-pages though, makes for a nice set.

Thanks for the extra info. Since format hasn't yet been decided, here's a vote for hardcover, in the same format as Challengers!

Since there's 360 pages of material, I had figured either 2 smaller books or 1 King-sized (pardon the pun!) slipcase.

Since it's 2 volumes, then it'll go like this:

Vol. 1 - 133-139, 141 (185 pgs) - The DNA project, Goody Rickels (I'm sure Don is thrilled about this, right! )

Vol. 2 - 142-148 (175 pgs) - Transilvane, the Evil Factory, Victor Volcanium - including the untold tales of the DNA project shorts.

There's a natural break between 141 and 142, as all of the dangling plotlines were tied up before Superman and Jimmy get tangled up in Transilvane.

I'm holding out for a $12.95 trade from B+N.

No, really...I vote hardcover, of course. Please...please...please....throw this Jack fan a bone. I want something of his material in HC. Only long out of print Masterworks have gathered his well-known material into a prestige format. A Jimmy Olsen HC would be the first time DC would give him such treatment, to which I say, let's do it!

With the Jimmy and Challengers collections planned, it would be nice if DC made these part of a Kirby Archives series that eventually would include the Fourth World books in color, too.

The Pure Images Kirby reprint books are unauthorized ripoffs of Kirby's work. Kirby's wife Roz was trying to stop them at the time of her death. I wouldn't buy them for that reason alone.

Just in case it hasn't been thought about, a slipcase is a nice way of adding value where there's a hardcover series with a finite run and volumes released over a set time period (eg three volumes of Neal Adams Batman, two apiece of Kirby's Jimmy Olsen and Challengers. The best precendent I can think of is the Valiant Unity four volume TPB set where the slipcase came with volume one and the next three volumes slotted in nicely as they were published. It must also be a good way of ensuring buyers of volume one come back for more. How could any fanboy leave a slipcase half empty?

I logged on tonight with the plan of requesting a hardback collection of the Kirby Jimmy Olsen stuff. That's great news that a collection is happening.

But! Please! Make it a hardback, dustjacket slipcase!

I'd buy it!!!!

Hardcover at least!! It so deserves it!!

To date, all Archives have been collected by either by title (i.e. Superman, Dark Knight), character (Black Canary) or feature (JSA, Legion). Jack's Kirby's Jimmy Olsen is a finite run of the book that's being organized around a specific creator. I think that's why it isn't an Archive. An Archive would naturally start with Jimmy Olsen #1--and wouldn't get to the Kirby material until sometime just before the sun dies, a few billion years from now. If DC wants to publish the Kirby material, it makes sense to bypass the Archives line.

Exactly.

Additionally, the Jimmy volumes will almost certainly be the pilot for the rest of the Kirby Fourth World (and maybe the rest of Kirby's 1970s DC work) in DC hardcovers.

I think the certainly deserve the hard cover treatment, but my wallet hopes they come out as trade paperbacks.

I'm cheered to know that these won't probably be in the Archive line. I want a Jimmy Archive that starts with no. 1, and I'm afraid that a competing Kirby Jimmy would prevent that from happening in the near future.

I think that they should have a Kirby Library with its own distinctive trade dress--that way there would be no confusion.

With the Kirby Library, then, they should put out harcovers of each, followed by softcovers a year later.

I'd prefer to see the JIMMY OLSEN by JACK KIRBY volumes to be in hardcover, but if they aren't issued that way...well, the hell with collectability, I'm taking the books to the bindery, and making my own darn ARCHIVES dust jacket!!!!

A Kirby JIMMY OLSEN Archive ?

If only...

But it has to be in color for me to buy it. Trade or Archive hardcover, but I won't buy it unless it's in color.
